Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                                        June 7, 2005

May 23 through June 5, 2005, Report No. 10

Oakdale

The Oakdale trap sampled 9 out of 14 days between May 23 and June 5.  A total of 86 juvenile Chinook were captured increasing the season total to 187,752.  Daily catch fluctuated throughout the sampling period and ranged from 5 to 15 Chinook (Figure 1).  Average forklength was 91 mm and ranged from 71 mm to 108 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 8.9 g and ranged from 4.2 g to 14.8 g.

Average forklength increased by 8 mm and average weight increased by more than 1.5 g since the previous sampling period (i.e., May 9 to May 22).  Similar increase in size was observed in previous years.

Three juvenile O.mykiss were captured during the sampling period increasing the season total to 24 at Oakdale.  Refer to Table 1 below for data collected from each O. mykiss captured.

Table 1.  Date, forklength,  weight and smolt index (SI) of O. mykiss captured at Oakdale between May 23 and June 5, 2005.

1Smolt index rating scale: 1-Sac-fry; 2-Fry; 3-Parr; 4-Silvery Parr; 5-Smolt; 6-Adult

Due to low numbers of natural Chinook, no trap efficiency releases were conducted during the sampling period.

Caswell

The Caswell traps sampled 9 out of 14 days between May 23 and June 5.  A total of 122 juvenile Chinook were captured increasing the season total to 25,261.  Daily catch ranged from 3 to 27 Chinook (Figure 2).  Average forklength was 93 mm and ranged from 80 mm to 113 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 8.8 g and ranged from 2.6 g to 17.8 g.  Average forklength increased by 5 mm and average weight increased by only 0.1 g over the previous sampling period (i.e., May 9 to May 22).   No O. mykiss were captured during the sampling period.

Figure 2. Chinook Catch at Caswell versus flow at Ripon.

No trap efficiency releases were conducted at Caswell during the sampling period due to low catch of natural Chinook.

Environmental Data

Environmental conditions fluctuated during the sampling period as releases at Goodwin Dam began to decrease on May 30 marking the end of the Vernalis Adaptive Management Plan (VAMP).  Post-VAMP flow releases are being ramped down from 1,500 cfs to 300 cfs at a rate of 100 cfs per day over a twelve day period ending on June 10.  Instantaneous temperature fluctuated between 54° F and 55° F at Oakdale and between 60° F and 62° F at Caswell.  Turbidity ranged from 1.4 NTU to 3.9 NTU at Oakdale and from 1.9 NTU to 5.8 NTU at Caswell.  During the sampling period, flow releases from GDW ranged between 839 cfs and 1,507 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 777 cfs to 1,435 cfs and Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) ranged from 1,025 cfs to 1,531 cfs.
