Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                                        April 19, 2005

April 4 through April 17, 2005, Report No. 7

Oakdale

Due to consistently low catch the trap was sampled intermittently (9 out of 14 days) between April 4 and April 17.  A total of 354 juvenile Chinook were captured increasing the season total to 187,062.  Daily catch fluctuated throughout the sampling period and ranged from 2 to 85 Chinook (Figure 1).  Average forklength was 67.3 mm and ranged from 32 mm to 104 mm. Average weight for captured Chinook was 3.3 g and ranged from 1.0 g to 10.7 g.  No O.mykiss were captured during the sampling period.

Average forklength increased by more than 10 mm and average weight increased by almost 1.0 g since the previous sampling period (March 21 to April 3).  Low daily catch is characteristic at Oakdale during this time of year when average fish size is within the range of the parr lifestage (45mm-79 mm).

Figure 1. Chinook Catch at Oakdale versus flow at Orange Blossom Bridge.

Due to low numbers of natural Chinook, no trap efficiency releases were conducted during the sampling period.

Caswell

Similar to Oakdale, the traps were fished intermittently (5 out of 14 days) during the sampling period due to consistently low daily catch.  A total of 144 juvenile Chinook were captured between April 4 and April 17 increasing the season total to 24,178.  Daily catch was similar to Oakdale and ranged from 9 to 60 Chinook (Figure 2).  Average forklength was 82.6 mm and ranged from 42 mm to 99 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 6.6 g and ranged from 0.9 g to 10.8 g.  Average forklength increased by over 14 mm and average weight increased more than 3.0 g over the previous sampling period (March 21 to April 3).   No O.mykiss were captured during the sampling period.

Figure 2. Chinook Catch at Caswell versus flow at Ripon.

No trap efficiency releases were conducted at Caswell during the sampling period due to low catch of natural Chinook.

Environmental Data

Environmental conditions fluctuated during the sampling period.  Instantaneous temperature fluctuated between 53° F and 57° F at Oakdale and between 58° F and 60° F at Caswell.  Turbidity ranged from 2.0 NTU to 3.4 NTU at Oakdale and from 2.4 NTU to 4.6 NTU at Caswell.  During the sampling period, flow releases from Goodwin Dam (GDW) ranged between 226 cfs and 342 cfs.  Releases from GDW were increased from approximately 225 cfs to 400 cfs on April 17 for the Interim Operations Plan (IOP) fishery flows.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 246 cfs to 298 cfs and Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) ranged from 281 cfs to 373 cfs.
