Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                                        May 24, 2005

May 9 through May 22, 2005, Report No. 9

Oakdale

The Oakdale trap sampled intermittently (8 out of 14 days) during the Vernalis Adaptive Management Plan (VAMP) period due to consistently low daily catch.  A total of 94 juvenile Chinook were captured increasing the season total to 187,666.  Daily catch fluctuated throughout the sampling period and ranged from 4 to 20 Chinook (Figure 1). Average forklength was 83 mm and ranged from 60 mm to 105 mm. Average weight for captured Chinook was 7.2 g and ranged from 2.5 g to 17.4 g.  No O.mykiss were captured during the sampling period.

Average forklength increased by almost 5 mm and average weight increased by almost 2.0 g since the previous sampling period (i.e., April 18 to May 8).  Similar increase in size was observed in previous years.

Figure 1. Chinook Catch at Oakdale versus flow at Orange Blossom Bridge.

Due to low numbers of natural Chinook, no trap efficiency releases were conducted during the sampling period.

Caswell

The Caswell traps sampled intermittently (8 out of 14 days) during the VAMP period due to consistently low daily catch.  A total of 267 juvenile Chinook were captured increasing the season total to 25,139.  Daily catch ranged from 11 to 57 Chinook (Figure 2).  Average forklength was 88 mm and ranged from 74 mm to 108 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 7.9 g and ranged from 3.3 g to 13.6 g.  Average forklength increased by less than 4 mm and average weight increased by only 0.3 g over the previous sampling period (i.e., April 18 to May 8).   No O.mykiss were captured during the sampling period.

Figure 2. Chinook Catch at Caswell versus flow at Ripon.

No trap efficiency releases were conducted at Caswell during the sampling period due to low catch of natural Chinook.

Environmental Data

Environmental conditions fluctuated during the sampling period.  Instantaneous temperature fluctuated between 51° F and 55° F at Oakdale and between 55° F and 59° F at Caswell.  Turbidity ranged from 1.5 NTU to 2.3 NTU at Oakdale and from 3.0 NTU to 5.0 NTU at Caswell.  During the sampling period, flow releases from GDW ranged between 1,501 cfs and 1,507 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 1,303 cfs to 1,428 cfs and Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) ranged from 1,484 cfs to 1,535 cfs
