Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                               February 3, 2006

January 16-29, 2006, Report No. 1

Oakdale:

Due to heavy rains and flood control releases from Goodwin Dam, we could not safely operate the Oakdale rotary screw trap (RM 40.1) during the first two weeks of January. Once flows decreased below 5,500 cfs, the trap was installed on January 16th, which is about two weeks later than in previous years.  Sampling commenced immediately following installation and was conducted daily.

Figure 1. Oakdale rotary screw trap under a flow of approximately 4,400 cfs at Goodwin Dam on January 17, 2006.

A total of 5,727 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured between January 16th and January 29th (Figure 2).  Daily catch ranged from 111 to 802 Chinook.  Individual forklengths ranged from 30 mm to 64 mm and daily mean lengths ranged from 35.2 mm to 37.1 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 0.4 grams.  A 127 mm yearling Chinook was also captured on January 23rd but was not included in the total catch or in the calculations for mean length or weight.

Zero O. mykiss were captured in the rotary screw trap during this sample period.

Two trap efficiency tests were conducted at Oakdale (January 22 and January 29) with resulting efficiencies of 3.56% and 3.08%, respectively (Table 1).

Table 1. Trap efficiency tests conducted at Oakdale between January16 and January 29 2006.

Location Date Mark Number released Estimated Efficiency Flow (cfs)
Oakdale 1/22/06 CFG 477 3.56% 1,747
Oakdale 1/29/06 CFG 487 3.08% 1,572

Caswell:

At this point in time, we are not sampling at Caswell (RM 8.6) due to insufficient project funding. The Anadromous Fish Restoration Program (AFRP) is currently trying to locate funds to continue this monitoring effort. However, in the absence of AFRP funds, this site will not be sampled in 2006.

Environmental Data:

Instantaneous water temperature taken at the Oakdale rotary screw trap ranged between 48.6°F and 49.8°F.  Turbidity at Oakdale ranged from 1.3 NTU to 2.7 NTU.  During the sampling period releases from Goodwin Dam ranged between 1,805 cfs and 5,022 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 1,569 cfs and 4,364 cfs and at Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) from 1,973 cfs and 4,878 cfs.
