May 29 through June 11, 2006, Report No. 10

Oakdale:

Between May 29 and June 11, the Oakdale rotary screw trap sampled nine days beginning on June 2 when the trap was reinstalled following repairs. A total of 1,674 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured between June 3 and June 11, increasing the season total to 54,159 (Figure 1).  Daily catch ranged from 109 to 392 Chinook.  Average forklength was 83.7 mm and ranged from 38 mm to 108 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 4.3 g and ranged from 0.5 g to  7.4 g.

No trap efficiency tests were conducted at Oakdale during the sampling period.

Caswell:

The Caswell rotary screw traps sampled 13 out of 14 days between May 29 and June 11.  A total of 512 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured, increasing the season total to 1,474 (Figure 2).  Daily catch ranged from eight to 73 Chinook.  Average forklength was 89.4 mm and ranged from 75 mm to 120 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 8.0 g and ranged from 7.2 g to  8.6 g.

One O. mykiss (206 mm; 93.5 g; SI 5) was captured on June 1 increasing the season total to two.

One trap efficiency test was conducted at Caswell on May 31 using Chinook from Merced River Hatchery with a resulting efficiency of 0.3% (Table 2).

Smolt Survival Release:

The California Department of Fish and Game released 75,000 coded-wired tagged (CWT) Merced River Hatchery Chinook at Knight's Ferry on April 28 to evaluate survival in the lower Stanislaus River.  Between May 29 and June 11, a total of 19 CWT fish (daily range: 0 to 5) were recaptured at Oakdale (14.2 river miles downstream of release site; Figure4) and 18 (daily range: 0 to 4) were recaptured at Caswell (45.7 river miles downstream of release site; Figure 5) (note: catch scales between figures are not the same). This brings the season total of CWT fish to 462 for Oakdale and 24 for Caswell.

Environmental Data:

Instantaneous water temperature fluctuated between 50.0°F and 54.0°F at Oakdale and between 55.5°F and 61.0°F at Caswell.  Turbidity ranged from 0.5 NTU to 1.6 NTU at Oakdale and from 1.6 NTU to 9.1 NTU at Caswell.  During the sampling period, releases from Goodwin Dam (GDW) ranged between 1,501 cfs and 2,914 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 1,476 cfs to 2,760 cfs and at Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) from 1,805 cfs to 3,341 cfs.
