Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                                       July 13, 2006

 


June 26 through July 9, 2006, Report No. 12

Oakdale:

Between June 26 and July 9, the Oakdale rotary screw trap sampled eight out of 14 days. A total of 167 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured, increasing the season total to 55,120 (Figure 1).  Daily catch ranged from nine to 36 Chinook.  Average forklength was 90.0 mm and ranged from 62 mm to 110 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 8.5 g and ranged from 6.9 g to 11.0 g.

Nine young-of-the-year O. mykiss were captured during the sampling period increasing the season total to 51 (Table 1).

No trap efficiency tests were conducted at Oakdale during the sampling period.

Caswell:

The Caswell rotary screw traps sampled eight out of 14 days between June 26 and July 9.  A total of 10 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured, increasing the season total to 1,586 (Figure 2).  Daily catch ranged from zero to four Chinook.  Average forklength was 91.7 mm and ranged from 79 mm to 104 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 8.9 g and ranged from 5.4 g to  11.1 g

No O. mykiss  were captured at Caswell during the sampling period.

Environmental Data:

Instantaneous water temperature fluctuated between 54.8°F and 55.9°F at Oakdale and between 61.2°F and 62.6°F at Caswell.  Turbidity ranged from 0.7 NTU to 1.4 NTU at Oakdale and from 2.1 NTU to 3.8 NTU at Caswell.  During the sampling period, releases from Goodwin Dam (GDW) ranged between 1,202 cfs and 1,323 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 1,155 cfs to 1,295 cfs and at Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) from 1,318 cfs to 1,665 cfs.
