Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                                       July 31, 2006

July 10 through July14, 2006, Report No. 13

Oakdale:

Between July 10 and July 14, the Oakdale rotary screw trap sampled four out of five days. A total of 43 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured, increasing the season total to 55,163 (Figure 1).  Daily catch ranged from seven to 14 Chinook.  Average forklength was 88.6 mm and ranged from 69 mm to 105 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 7.7 g and ranged from 5.3 g to 9.8 g.

Five young-of-the-year O. mykiss were captured during the sampling period increasing the season total to 56 (Table 1).

Table 1. Biosampling data collected on O. mykiss captured at Oakdale between July 10 and July 14, 2006.

Date Forklength (mm) Weight (g) Smolt Index
7/11/06 98 11.4 4
7/11/06 90 8.7 3
7/12/06 85 6.7 3
7/12/06 64 2.8 3
7/14/06 78 5.2 3

No trap efficiency tests were conducted at Oakdale during the sampling period.

Sampling was terminated for the season on July 14 due to consistently low Chinook catch.  The trap was removed from the river on July 19.  The Oakdale trap will undergo some safety modifications during the off-season, as well as replacement of floatation material in the pontoons.

Caswell:

The Caswell rotary screw traps sampled four out of five days between July 10 and July 14.  Zero juvenile Chinook salmon were captured during the sampling period (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Chinook Catch at Caswell versus Stanislaus River flow at Ripon (RIP).

No O. mykiss  were captured at Caswell during the sampling period.

Sampling at Caswell was also terminated on July 14 due to several days in a row of zero Chinook catch.  The Caswell traps were removed from the river on July 20 (Figure 3).  We would like to thank South San Joaquin Irrigation District (SSJID) for assisting with trap removal again this year.

Environmental Data:

Instantaneous water temperature fluctuated between 55.4°F and 56.2°F at Oakdale and between 62.0°F and 62.6°F at Caswell.  Turbidity ranged from 0.6 NTU to 1.4 NTU at Oakdale and from 2.2 NTU to 3.4 NTU at Caswell.  During the sampling period, releases from Goodwin Dam (GDW) ranged between 1,206 cfs and 1,209 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 1,108 cfs to 1,166 cfs and at Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) from 1,257 cfs to 1,333 cfs.
