Stanislaus River Juvenile Chinook Outmigration Update                               March 8, 2006

January 30 - February 19, 2006, Report No. 2

Oakdale:

A total of 26,694 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured between January 30 and February 19 (Figure 1).  Daily catch ranged from 50 to 3,110 Chinook.  Individual forklengths ranged from 30 mm to 53 mm and daily mean lengths ranged from 33.6 mm to 36.1 mm.  Average weight for captured Chinook was 0.4 grams.

Three yearling Chinook were captured during this sample period.  Forklengths ranged from 120 mm to 146 mm and average yearling weight was 27.5 g.  The yearlings were not included in the total catch or in the calculations for mean length or weight.

Two O. mykiss were also captured in the rotary screw trap during this sample period.  Forklengths were 244 mm and 266 mm and respective weights were 164.8 g and 233.5 g.

Two trap efficiency tests were conducted at Oakdale (February 7 and February 14) with resulting efficiencies of 7.47% and 1.87%, respectively (Table 1).

Caswell:

Caswell (RM 8.6) screw traps are scheduled to be installed on March 7 and sampling will commence immediately.

Environmental Data:

Instantaneous water temperature taken at the Oakdale screw trap ranged between 47°F and 50°F.  Turbidity at Oakdale ranged from 0.6 NTU to 2.6 NTU.  During the sampling period releases from Goodwin Dam ranged between 1,800 cfs and 1,810 cfs.  Flows at Orange Blossom Bridge (OBB; RM 46.9) ranged from 1,569 cfs and 1,688 cfs and at Ripon (RIP; RM 15.8) from 1,842 cfs and 1,963 cfs
