Stanislaus River Weir Update                                                                             April 20, 2005

March 21 through April 12, 2005

Salmonid Passage  Between March 21 and April 12, no salmonids passed the Stanislaus River weir.  The last salmonid (Chinook) passing upstream through the weir was observed about three months earlier on January 12.   The weir was removed from the river on April 11-12 due to several months of no salmonids passing the weir and the need to remove the weir before VAMP begins and flows increase.

Other Species  Five non-salmonid species were detected passing upstream through the weir during the sampling period including Sacramento pikeminnow (n=3), Striped bass (n=1), Sacramento sucker (n=47), Goldfish (n=1) and Common carp (n=7).  Of these species, the Sacramento sucker was most abundant.

Livebox Trapping  Trapping was conducted between March 24 and March 30 due to an increase in turbidity (range: 4.1 NTU to 50.0 NTU).  Under high turbidity levels, the digital camera is unable to produce clear photographs of fish passing through the Vaki. Trapping is conducted whenever turbidity exceeds 4 NTUs.  The only fish captured during the trapping period was a Sacramento sucker (March 29; 455 mm).

A data report summarizing the 2004-05 results will be created in the near future and will be available for download on www.sanjoaquinbasin.com/stanislaus-river.html
