March 6 through March 19, 2006, Report No. 4

Waterford:

A total of 980 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured at Waterford between March 5 and March 19, increasing the season total to 7,759. Daily catch ranged from 33 to 112 Chinook (Figure 1). Average forklength was 38.2 mm and ranged from 30 mm to 105 mm. Average weight was 1.9 g and ranged from 0.2 g to 12.3 g.

Figure 1. Chinook salmon catch at Waterford versus flow at La Grange (LGN).

One yearling Chinook salmon (147 mm; 39.6 g) was captured at the Waterford site during this sample period, but was not included in the total catch or in calculations for mean length or weight.

Figure 2.  Yearling Chinook salmon, FL: 147mm, captured at Waterford on March 9th.

No O. mykiss were captured in the rotary screw trap during this sampling period.

No trap efficiency tests were conducted at Waterford during this sample period due to low catch numbers.

Grayson:

A total of 120 juvenile Chinook salmon were captured at Grayson between March 6 and March 19, increasing the season total to 1,314.  Daily catch ranged from 0 to 25 Chinook (Figure 3).  Average forklength was 38.9 mm and ranged from 32 mm to 82 mm.  Average weight was 1.4 g and ranged from 0.2 g to 5.3 g.

Figure 4. Chinook salmon catch at Grayson versus flow at Modesto (MOD).

Two yearling Chinook salmon were captured at the Grayson site during this sample period, but were not included in the total catch or in calculations for mean length or weight.  Yearling forklengths were 125 mm and 136 mm, and weights were 21.9 g and 27.4 g, respectively.

Figure 3.  Yearling Chinook salmon, FL: 125mm, captured at Grayson on March 15th.

No O. mykiss were captured in the rotary screw trap during this sampling period.

No trap efficiency tests were conducted at Grayson during this sample period due to low catch numbers.

Environmental Data:

Instantaneous water temperature ranged between 49.0°F and 50.8°F at the Waterford trap, and 49.0°F and 52.5°F at Grayson.  Turbidity fluctuated between 1.5 NTU and 2.7 NTU at Waterford, and from 1.7 NTU and 4.4 NTU at Grayson.  During the sampling period, flows at La Grange ranged between 3,029 cfs and 4,998 cfs, while flows at Modesto ranged between 4,019 cfs and 5,137 cfs.
